====================================================================== A Roman Wilderness of Pain A Single-Player/Coop Quake Episode ====================================================================== December 2009 This file, related files, and further information at http://tronyn.planetquake.gamespy.com/ ====================================================================== Introduction ====================================================================== This is a Quake 1 Single Player (Q1SP) and Cooperative episode. Each level is quite large, and custom content is featured. Therefore, to play this episode, a Custom Quake engine is REQUIRED: -FitzQuake085 is recommended. Download it at: http://www.celephais.net/fitzquake/ -aguirRe's GlQuake, WinQuake or NehQuake (see http://user.tninet.se/~xir870k/) -Darkplaces (see http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/) Make sure you use the latest build (darkplacesengine20090709.zip). -Other engines are not officially supported, but may work. -Use of -heapsize 480000 is recommended. ====================================================================== Installation ====================================================================== -Place all files in Quake\arwop, making sure that the folder names are intact. -In Quake\arwop, you should have progs.dat, progs_dp.dat, pak0.pak, pak1.pak, pak2.pak, and this readme file. -The progs.dp is a renamed progs.dat for DarkPlaces, which is not required for arwop. However, it is required for the nsoe patch. See below for details. -Start Quake -game arwop -Start a new game, and you will be taken to the start level of "A Roman Wilderness of Pain". -Map names are roman(x) in case you want to skip from map to map - but they are meant to be played in sequential order. ------------- Extra ------------- -Frikbots are supported. To play a game with them, add the option -listen x. For example, quake -game arwop -listen 8 +deathmatch 1. Impulse 100 adds a bot to your team, impulse 101 adds to a bot to an opposing team, impulse 102 removes a bot from the game. -Dmsp mode is supported. To activate dmsp, start a game and set the variable "temp1" to "1" in the console(~). Then restart the game. -If you experience slowdown, corpse removal may be enabled to remove the dead from the level. Go to the console, type impulse 72, then restart the level. This does not work in games of Hell difficulty (see below). ------------- Nsoe2 Patch ------------- If you have version 2 of Soul of Evil: Indian Summer installed, you may update it by copying progs.dat, pak0.pak, and pak1.pak from this archive to Quake\nsoe2 or wherever Indian Summer is installed. The progs fixes a few potential game-stopper bugs that may occur in the FitzQuake085 engine, and adds minor gameplay changes. WARNING: AFter updating, all previous nsoe2 saved games will no longer work. ====================================================================== Gameplay ====================================================================== ------------- Skill ------------- The start area has three short hallways. The one you go down selects the Skill you wish to play at. Easy: This is meant for little kids and grandmas. Medium: Most people should start at Medium skill. Hard: Are you a bad enough dude to play Hard? (Nightmare) This is so bad that the entry is hidden, so people won't wander in by accident. If you find it, don't say we didn't warn you. (Hell) Even worse than Nightmare. So much so that its hallway is locked and guarded by monsters. You must find and defeat its guardians before you are even allowed to enter. Beware, even if you manage to unlock Hell, think twice before entering. Hell is unfair. Monsters are stronger and respawn after death, damage from falling is higher and variable, and last but not least, most cheats are disabled. ------------- Firepower ------------- You can expect to find most of the standard Quake guns and some more exotic weaponry. AXE: Stronger and quicker than before, the axe can deliver a finishing blow that may decapitate weak opponents. The axe can also hack a zombie to pieces in three hits. CHAINSAW: With 50% more power than the axe, nothing screams carnage better than a blood-stained chainsaw. Once taken, the chainsaw replaces the axe. RUBY WAND: Fires blasts of magical energy to harm nearby foes. It is also a light in dark places, when all other lights go out. BLASTER: Fires bouncing lasers like the Laser Cannon, at half the speed. Almost as dangerous to you as it is to the enemy. THUNDERBOLT: Modified from the original by firing a bolt of lightning that can strike all targets in its path. GRAPPLING HOOK: A useful method of moving around, this version can also hook onto monsters. You may switch and use other weapons while the hook is out. MJOLNIR: Storms may manifest when it smites the enemy in melee. Mjolnir may also be slammed or thrown. The strength of the slam depends whether the fire button is pressed at the time of impact. To throw the hammer, double-click the fire button. BURIZA-DO KYANON: This is a crossbow that fires deadly icy bolts that will shatter most targets in a single hit. The bolts are fired with such force that they will pierce any target short of a solid wall. Much like a railgun, it is possible to line up and hit multiple targets with one well-aimed shot. Tip: Lightning cast from enemies can hit all targets in its path too! ------------- Ammo ------------- Ammo capacity has been changed from the standard. Players can carry up to a maximum of 100 shells, 250 nails, 50 rockets, and 200 cells. Note that since cell yield from ammo items and cell cost for Thunderbolt has doubled, cell capacity is effectively the same as before. In addition to the standard four ammo types, a fifth type has been added: ice bolts. ICE BOLTS: For the Buriza-Do Kyanon crossbow. Ice bolts may be found singly or in pairs. The player may carry up to 10 of them. Tip: Ice bolts don't grow on trees. Pick your targets wisely. ------------- Power-ups ------------- The new powerups you may encounter include the following: AMULET OF REFLECTION: Erects a force field that repels all missile fire away from you. Though a very powerful defense, you can still take damage from other forms of attack. CROSS OF DEFLECTION: Provides immunity to damage caused by explosions, drowning, and contact with hazardous liquids (i.e., slime or lava), and reduces damage taken from any other source by half. POTIONS: Health items in another form. They can boost health beyond the normal maximum at reduced effect. REJUVENATOR: Bestows unto you the power to regenerate at a rate of 1 health per second. Lasts until the end of level. TOME OF POWER: Contains magic that modifies weapons to produce more powerful attacks. Can combine with Quad Damage for devastating results. TREASURE: Found as gold coins or gems. Coins increase armor while gems increase health. The boosts can exceed normal maximums. ------------ Monsters ------------ Evil is a growth industry. They're always hiring! IMP: Winged little devils that cause trouble by chucking fireballs or swooping at you. While weak individually, they tend to appear in swarms and/or with other stronger monsters. HELL HOUND: Ghastly red canines that can breathe fire at their prey. They can withstand much more damage than normal dogs, meaning it will take more than a couple shots from your boomstick to make them play dead. FLAK OGRE: Ogres armed with a scattergun instead of a grenade launcher. Drops nails and a chainsaw when killed. WRATH: You may have met these wraith-like monsters before, but now they are back with new tricks. Tip: There are places that feature special monsters who appear only once or twice in the whole episode. You will need to discover them for yourself. ====================================================================== Credits ====================================================================== Tronyn - Roman1, Roman2, Roman3, original "Roman Wilderness" scraps.
