OLD NEWS.

DECEMBER 16th '97.

Just a message to say that I'm still around !
I'm sitting in a public library in Birmingham, England updating this - I'm on a crappy old 486 with 256 colors - hunk o junk, but at least I can get my email and stuff.
 
Well, Quake2 came out in the UK on 12th December as expected - hopefully it'll be in my Xmas stocking !
I finally got hold of a 3d card - I bought the rieghtous 3dfx card which set me back 100 english pounds but I have to wait another 3 weeks before I can use the thing - ARRRGGHHH.
Been doing some architectural research whilst over here - I'm going to work on a new section of the park next year, basically a reference section with photos and plans of interesting structures etc - that's one of the reasons I'm at the Library now.
I'm hanging to play Quake2 - this is killing me - I should have borrowed a lap top to bring on vacation :(

DECEMBER 5th '97.

Right, this is definatley the last prefab addition until the New Year and is quite fitting - yep, it's a Quake 2 logo.
I had to make this one due to the imminent release of what is probably the most anticipated game in history - hold on - it's beyond a game !! (now where have I heard that before ?)
 
To all the people who are regular visitors to the site and all the people who have submitted prefabs and made this site possible - thanks !!!
 
Have a Quakin xmas and a Fraggin New Year !!
There might be a few news updates about the UK quake scene if I come across anything interesting between now and the 5th Jan.
 
Until then, expect some rockin' quake2 prefabs next year....

DECEMBER 4th '97.

Ok - this could be the last serious prefab update for a month as I leave for the UK on vacation tommorrow evening (Wahoooooooooo).
I might update the news section with exciting vacation storys about the english weather just to keep you on the edge of your seats.
But, without further ado, here are the latest prefabs :
 
I knocked together a computer because I really am a sucker for punishment when I'm too busy - I reckon it looks like a 486, but with a bit of texture revamping it could be upgraded to a pentium II.
 
Richard Farrelly submitted a tank - very realistic, I love this one.
 
Phil Daniels has submitted a bed - this could be useful in a military base level of sorts, or maybe if you need a rest during a hectic deathmatch.
 
Well, that's all for now - I read at planetquake that Quake2 will be released in the UK most probably on the 12th of December - I'll be waiting outside the stores !!! - trouble is, I'll be hard pressed to find a computer to play it on so I'll probably have to wait till I get home before playing it :(
 
Anyways, next year is QUAKE2 prefabs year !!!
 
NOVEMBER 26th '97.

Wolfen has submitted an excellently crafted sword - you'll find that in the misc items decoration section.
 
Just read at Blues of a new site by weasl called 3D mapping guild - it looks like it's gonna be an excellent resource for all mappers out there, and it's got a link to my site :)
 
NOVEMBER 23rd '97.

Marc Bunin submitted a groovy Guillotine which is in the misc items decoration section.
 
I've knocked together a wrought iron fence and gate which is also in the decoration section.
 
I've re-included the full misc items download where you can download all of the misc items in one .zip file - I've had a few requests about this so have decided that it is a good idea - that file will always be downloadable directly from the misc items main page.
If anyone wants to count the amount of prefabs now on the site, please do so, as I get different numbers each time I try :)

NOVEMBER 21st '97.

Lord-Chaos has submitted a GIGANTIC rocket prefab, this is a first for the park, and is akin to the star-wars vehicles found at The Quakelab.
I've put this prefab into the misc items decoration section.
More prefabs coming this weekend.
 
NOVEMBER 16th '97.

Major update today

New prefabs added as follows :-
First off, Lord-Chaos has submitted a real cool and BIG bridge, you'll find that in the Misc Group stairs/ramps/bridges/lifts section.
 
Second up, there are two submissions from EutecTic/
A group of five windows, in the windows :) section and a standard teleporter, as per DM6, which you will find in the doors section of the misc items group.
 
As promised in my previous posting, there are a helluva lot of updated prefabs done by EutecTic - he's worked damn hard at recreating and generally improving prefabs, and as I mentioned in the previous post as well, it's mainly in aid of a new project by EutecTic which I will announce as and when it's done - I'm working closely with EutecTic on this one, as it can only help improve the park and also the quality of prefabs avaliable to level editors.
Here they are:-
 
In the e1 group, 8 prefabs updated, follow link for details.
 
In the misc group windows section, the rlights, clights & flights have been given a reworking.

In the misc group doors section, the newmededoor & newscourgedoor have been updated.
 
In the misc group arches/supports section, the wizarch has been updated.
 
In the misc group pipes/halls section, the halls have been updated.
 
Finally, in the tech group the tech 23 items have been updated.
 
I think that is about it, screenshots, downloads & htm files have been updated, so if there are any errors, PLEASE tell me - I don't want to know about spelling mistakez, just link and download errors (when it comes to downloads, wait until the 17th november before you mail me with a bad download link - cdrom mirrors every hour, but is not perfect.
 
NOVEMBER 14th '97.

EutecTic has updated a lot of the prefabs and posted them to me - basically, he's cut down the brush counts and "neatend" a lot of the prefabs, so, without further ado, here's details of the changed prefabs:-
 
Water Tunnels Group - Submitted some time ago by Chunka, these are really cool and have been further enhanced by a large reduction in brushes and faces.

hexgrill - The brushes here have been generally neatened up.
 
These were fixed up for EutecTics Qed prefab site, which is now dead - but expect some good news from that side soon.
There'll be some more enhancements to existing prefabs as time goes by.....
 

NOVEMBER 7th '97.

Four new prefabs added - details as follows:- Aegis sent in two cool bridges, A rope bridge and A hanging walkway both in the misc group stairs/ramps/bridges/lifts section.
Rob Hicks sent in an updated version of his spiral staircase - this one has a handrail, it is also in the stairs/ramps/bridges/lifts section.
Finally, EutecTic (Jean-Francois Groleau) of the former qED Toolshed
sent in an excellently crafted arch - note the perfect texturing on this prefab, that is in the misc group arches/supports section.
 
Well, finally work is starting to cool down a bit so I can concentrate on more important stuff like Quake :)

NOVEMBER 4th '97.
 
Rob Hicks submitted a really well created spiral staircase, something that is missing from the park.
You can check it out and down load it in the misc group stairs section.

NOVEMBER 1st '97.
 
Managed to find some time to add some prefabs submitted by dogwalker.
They are a set of "broken" style prefabs to add a bit of spice to your level - I've put them in the misc group decoration section.
 
I've been hectically busy lately trying to put together a 90 page website complete with graphics - it's got to go live on tuesday and I'm really struggling to find inspiration to get the damn thing done - I suppose losing my job if I don't manage to get it done is inspiration enough !
Don't you hate it when deadlines get shorter and people mess you around with design changes ??
Well, that's my little rant - hope you all enjoyed halloween - I'm suffering from an immense hangover :(
OCTOBER 27th '97.
 
Long time no update, but I've been way busy with that thing called "real life" - anyway, as usual, the update includes some new prefabs. At the moment, I'm only adding some of the prefabs I've created recently, as I only had 2 hours to update inbetween other stuff - there'll be more prefabs, submitted ones, asap. The three new prefabs are in Quake2 demo style - I've taken a quick look through the demo for anything which really appeals to me (very hard considering that so much does) and come up with 3 prefabs detailed as follows:-
q2column - this is a column which features prominently in the Q2 demo and is one I really dig.
q2hall - this is also a prominent feature in the demo, the sloped sided hall - reminiscent of some of the quake and hipnotic levels.
Finally, the q2octhall which is simalar to the shape of the small room at the bottom of the slime pit in the demo - except it has no door.
All the textures are normal Quake textures - I have respected ID's wishes with regards to not using any quake2 textures until the final release of Quake2.
Bear in mind, these are approximations of items in the Demo, and are more inspired by the demo than copied directly.
I hope you enjoy these additions - I enjoyed making them.
Expect some more Q2 type prefabs soon, as well as some "broken" wall/ceiling style prefabs.
 
OCTOBER 21st '97.
 
The Quake demo was cool - but as the text file explained, just a hardware test, so were all hanging on the edge of our seats again in anticipation for the final release to see what changes and additions have been made - Go ID !!.
Never ceases to amaze me how quickly people get through demos and report back the secrets, commands etc. they've found - where do they get the time ??? :) God knows I wish I had more time - on my work & home puter for 16 hours a day as it is - maybe I should go for 18 hours...
 
Back to biz - a new set of pipes (octapipes)have been knocked together.
Basically, Jean-Francois Groleau sent in two octagonal pipes - 128x128 & 96x96, so I decided to add in corners for them and also a reducer/expander to join the different sizes together - a bit of a joint effort :).
I've also included the usual wall inserts and tunnel seals in the zip file.
 
OCTOBER 18th '97.
 
Major upgrade today - the misc items group has finally been split up into sections.
It was way overdue for the revamp - you'll find the details in the misc items group.

Three new prefabs submitted by Jean-Francois Groleau's of the qED Toolshed
Firstly, there is a cool jumplift, using a trigger_push entity + doors - have to check this one out, it's cool - You'll find it in the stairs/ramps/bridges/lifts section of the misc items group.
Secondly, an airlift, based on the same concept as above - this is a totally revamped version of a prefab I submitted to the Quakelab some time ago. Jean has taken this original, and completley reworked it making it into a much better item. You'll also find that in the stairs/ramps/bridges/lifts section.
Lastly, another revamped article originally by Steve Kapusta which is also found at the Quakelab - a castle door.
This item is a must for medevil/castle levels and can be found in the doors section of the misc items group.
 
YEAHHHHH - A QUAKE2 DEMO HAS BEEN RELEASED - NO UPDATES FOR A WHILE :)

OCTOBER 18th '97.

Three cool prefabs added today !
First up, we have a revisit to the Iris Door, the original comes from the QuakeLab and was created by Iain Bruce.
Jean-Francois Groleau's of the qED Toolshed has recreated the prefab and sent me the .map file, a variant of the Iris hatch by Stefano Biefeni can be found at Jeans site in the qED prefab format.
Check out the .map file in the misc section.
Second, Chunka has submitted an entrance hall which fits around the newscourgedoor - I've put that prefab into the tech group, because it fits in really well with the other prefabs there.
Finally, I received an email from Tesla Coil asking whether it's possible to create a dome, or sphere in Quake. I've never seen one in Quake before, but after much thought and vertex editing, resulting in a headache :), I took up the challenge and created a dome - check it out in the misc section.

OCTOBER 14th '97 - some hours later....

Chunka sent in another great bunch of prefabs, basically a set of water tunnels - very functional, rather than decorative - I've put them in thier own group called water tunnels - kewl !!

Must do a recount to see how many prefabs there are now - must be close on 150.

OCTOBER 14th '97

Two new prefabs added:-
newscourgedoor and a submission by Imaginos which goes along with the egyptian prefabs he recently submitted.
Check out the horus prefab, comes with it's own wad file - very cool !
Been having computer troubles lately, but I'll spare you the details (it's something to do with some operating system which really sucks and me stupidly carrying around a hard drive for file transportation....)

OCTOBER 10th '97

Received an email from Jean-François Groleau who pointed out that the mededoor in the misc section had problems. Check out his site The QED Toolshed.
He sent me an improved version which inspired me to recreate the door from scratch using vertex editing.
The new improved door is in the misc section.

OCTOBER 7th '97

Been some time since and update, but I've been hetically busy on all fronts. I'm overloaded at work and with freelance and also made the mistake of buying 'dungeon keeper' - a seriously cool seeming game and possibly very addictive.
Anyways - back to biznezz - Received one prefab today from Chunka, and it's a strange one - call me stupid, but I can't figure out what it's supposed to be - looks cool anyhow - check it out here in the misc section.

I Recently commited myself to writing an article (On top of all the other stuff I'm busy with - I never learn !!! ), so I better get on with it - when it's out, I'll give the link.....

OCTOBER 3rd '97

Imaginos submitted a way cool bunch of egyptian style prefabs - there in the misc section. He also included a .wad file because some of the textures are original as well.

OCTOBER 1st '97

Chunka sent in some additions to his arch core group - basically the same prefabs, but with lights, doors & grills - very cool.
Tarl submitted some supports/arches which can be used virtually anywhere - thanks. !!

The Park just keeps getting bigger.....

SEPTEMBER 30th '97

Did quite a major site update/overhaul over the past two days.
Chunka sent in such a cool prefab group that they have there own prefab section called archcore - he obviously spent a long time on them and
they rock !
Check them out, download them and create some awesome levels.
The old bridges group has been moved into the misc section where it seems more at home.

Because of adding a new prefab section, I decided to revamp the site a bit and also add in the tutorial section to the main menu.

The next task is to break down the misc section into seperate groups, as it is getting a bit full.....

SEPTEMBER 28th '97

Chunka sent in an updated version of his pentagram - this one has brushes surrounding it to make it easier to put it in a floor/window/wall etc. - Just delete any of the brushes you don't need.
I put it in the same zip file as the previous one, and updated the screen shot.
He also sent in a rude joke...

Pick up line: "Wanna root?"
Reply: "NO!"
Come back: "Well lie down, spread your legs & let me have one!"


Hmmm, you'd have to know what 'root' means to an aussie for that one :) ...

Great day - reached over 100 prefabs with the following submissions:-
Mark Fairbairn sent in a rail cart which would be cool in a mine level, and Chunka sent in a must have pentagram for all those evil levels - check out his site, which has some levels to download.

To get above the hundred mark, I chucked up three more Columns.
Next target is 150 ........

SEPTEMBER 25th '97

My brains been working like a clockwork orange with all the new stuff I'm busy working on/learning, here's a snippet - just a simple column in the misc section. Vertex manipulation and worldcraft rule !!

Hmmm, as per usual, Murphys Law strikes again - Qpp is now 5 prefabs short of the hundred mark, and things seemed to have slowed down dramatically - I guess it's time for me to make another five good prefabs for the site.....

SEPTEMBER 24th '97

Imaginos sent in a collection of five windows, 2 square and three round.
The interesting thing to note in these prefabs, is that no brush subtraction/ carving was used in thier creation.
I've received some very helpful emails from Imaginos, who was one of the first to create quake maps in the old text editor days (Ye Gods !! - HOW ???)
His advice is to avoid brush subtraction wherever possible, and I've recently found this to be completely accurate - rather go for vertex manipulation, more time consuming initially, but saves hitting problems later.
Another gem is difficult to believe - wider brushes VIS much faster than thin brushes.
This has been confirmed by other top level designers.
Well, don't take that advice lightly - I'm convinced ! - Thanks for the info Imaginos !

Oh yeah, the park is six shy of 100 prefabs - almost there.....

Jose Pires sent me email to inform me of a leak in the halls group which is in the misc section - I located the leak and fixed it, so if you downloaded halls.zip, download it again with the fix.

New prefabs added to the misc section, Arch columns and Windows sent in by Noel Weer of the Quake Workshop - nice low brush counts, but still look great !

Got quite a lot of submissions today. WolfeN of WolfeN's LaiR sent in some Roof lights and A hall group (Corner, hall, 4way & tjunction.)
Richard Bracknell sent in a lot of prefabs, so I took the best ones which are all lamps.
Thanks !! - There is now 79 quality prefabs at the park !! (Gonna reach 100 soon..)

More prefabs submitted by WolfeN of WolfeN's LaiR, this time some snazzy corner lights - way to go - might soon have to have a WolfeN prefab group :)

Well, hope that some people got some help out of the tutorial I knocked together, I'm thinking of doing another one soon which explains the easiest way to create an arched door to fit the 128x192 high Quake door textures.
I've been asked whether I could take prefab requests from people, thinking long and hard about this, and the little time I have at my disposal anyway, the answer is a maybe. What might be a good idea is to have a request area to which anybody can reply.
Ie- Bob 'Fragthang' blekinsop wants a cool set of roman statues and sends in a request, I then post this up on a requests page.
Fred 'Hangman' Dweeble replies by sending in a set of cunningly crafted greek statues using only 4500 brushes which took him four months to build but will do the trick for Bobs Level.
Something like that anyway.......

New Prefab group called the "The half hex halls" sent in by Noel Weer of the Quake Workshop.
They have a really unique feel about them - sort of strangley 'alien insect' (Well, that's how they look to me :)

Well, I didn't get round to a site redesign this weekend - wonder if I ever will ?


SEPTEMBER 12th '97

Created a set of octagonal pipes for windtunnels, grenade tunnels etc.
You'll find them in the misc section.
They took a while to get right - the hardest being the four way intersection, I was pulling my hair out over that one - and as usual the final solution was easy.
Maybe I should write a tutorial on octagonal pipe corner & intersection creation :)

Received a cool arch from Dustin Geeraert (aka aBivr) - thanks dude !
It's in the misc section and is called wizarch.map.

Noel Weer of The Quake workshop writes:-

First off, just thought I let you know I like the concept of your site and hope to see it grow. Enough so that I linked it from my pages at the Quake Workshop.
Second, I build some fair levels, and my lastest was just released with some modified versions of your prefabs. (some from the tunnel set, the hex grill [very cool], and the 256 ramp). horrid.bsp (762k) is at cdrom.com and at the Quake Workshop.

Checked out that map - well designed, keeping the theme throughout and with low polycounts. Must admit that I had to look hard to recognise any of the prefabs, which is cool !

SEPTEMBER 9th '97

Been real busy lately at work and with real life - managed to get around to creating a new group of prefabs called 'bridges' containing five original bridge structures.
Recieved a fair amount of feedback saying keep up the good work and that the site is useful to them - that'll keep me going.
Hopefully I'll have a lot of spare time this weekend and will be able to create some more prefabs and also do a site redesign.

AUGUST 21st '97

Received a whole collection of prefabs from David "Kevlar" Kelvin.
They are 12 prefabs from the shareware episode of Quake (basically episode 1) and are brilliantly recreated with the proper textures etc.
They have been added to a new prefab group The e1 group
Thanks Kevlar - much appreciated.

The site is getting closer to having to be recreated - it took me a good 4 hours to get this group of 12 prefabs up in the present style of the site.
The frames route with a res of 800x600 seems the only way to go.....

BTW - if anyone creates some cool levels using prefabs from this site, send them in, and I can get a levels section going.

AUGUST 20th '97

I'm receiving some great feedback - the hit counter is going great guns - which hopefully means that the site is usefull !

It's a well designed desk and chair (even has a notepad and lamp on the desk)
I put it in the misc' items section - thanks Brad !.

Jeez - what a f'in long time it took to update this entry - my poor puter was bombing out like the luftwafe - turns out that my three drives were too close to each other and were causing excess heat - thus my computer was switching itself off after an hour or so (I think) - stripped the whole puter down and redesigned the 'spagetti junction' layout inside with the help of my trusty puter expert Pete - hopefully all shall go well.....
